Initiative: The First Key to Success
Author, Martha Lawrence, Sets the Example
By Sheri McGregor

“Crisis is an opportunity,” says mystery author Martha Lawrence.

Lawrence had hit bottom in her life when an idea for a book series about a psychic detective surfaced. Recovering from an attack by a serial rapist in 1985, Lawrence says a therapist helped her to see she was using alcohol to numb her pain. Through therapy and AA meetings, she began to pull herself from the depths of denial and depression, and work toward a better future.

Looking back, Lawrence realizes initiative is what brought her success. Many women have dreams, but they don’t take the initiative to follow through. Lawrence did. “I could have left my story idea alone,” she says. Lawrence had muffled the voice of her soul for security in editing and business writing jobs before. Five books later, she knows she made the right decision.

Are you willing to take a chance at following your dreams? Lawrence feels many women don’t know how to act on their ideas. Instead, they complain about their circumstances without making a plan to change their lives. Following dreams can lead to success and happiness.

“Men just do what they want to do,” Lawrence says. And they don’t make excuses. “The trick for moms is to take care of themselves first.”

In allowing herself to follow her dream, Lawrence feels she has inspired her son to reach for his own. “He’s pursuing acting and modeling,” she says, exuding confidence that her son’s talent and drive will put him on top. “Children learn by example,” she says. “Not by their mothers catering to their every need.”

May we all be as strong and confident as Lawrence in leading lives that feed our souls while setting a good example for our children. After all, says Lawrence, isn’t part of the dream just to be a good mom?
